2nd Grader Completes All Levels in MATH FACT SCHOLARS Program

Gavin Fenelon, in kindergarten at the time, was one of the first students to enroll in the MATH FACT SCHOLARS – Community Math Program (sponsored by the Coldwell Banker Gundaker, Town & Country office) that started at CBC High School in February, 2011.

In less than 2 years, Gavin completed the testing requirements for the Bronze Medal Level, Silver Medal Level, Gold Medal Level, Platinum Level trophy, Olympian Series – Fractions Level trophy, and the Olympian Series – Decimals Level. To advance through each of these levels, Gavin had to pass timed tests (with a 95% accuracy rate) covering skills including; basic addition, subtraction, multiplication & division facts, multi-digit computation including long division, and adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals. Then…on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, Gavin passed the final test in the 7th and final level of the MATH FACT SCHOLARS program, and earned the Olympian Series – Percent Level trophy!

In the final test, the 25th test for this level, Gavin had to write down the decimal and percentage equivalents to 50 fractions within a 3 minute time limit. The conversions were the easy part for Gavin, the difficult part was getting those little second grade hands to write fast enough to complete the test in 3 minutes. After his 8th attempt, Gavin passed the final test!

Gavin was motivated to complete the final level in the program before the end of 2nd grade because he wanted to be the second, 2nd grader, in the world, to complete all levels in the MATH FACT SCHOLARS program. He did it!

While the MATH FACT SCHOLARS before-school program is currently implemented by parent organizations within area elementary schools, the program is not available at Gavin’s school. It is important to point out that Gavin would not have had the opportunity to advance his math skills to 6th grade level, for a total parent investment of $210, if not for the availability of the MATH FACT SCHOLARS – Community Math Program sponsored by the Town & Country CBG office. The CBG-T&C sponsorship of the program is a tremendous gift to the community!
